I hadn't. That is, I hadn't until I saw this color of dye. Then, I saw a picture of a fruit salad that included Dragon Fruit. I had to look at pictures because the fruit in the bowl looked nothing like the dye. Here's what I found online:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijhos9g_vWuxqrr2yUed3NJCKnkopQLe_Czo0osCmqucSQgfj4coOYNfkA7S9Q6NBaJNCdcVlGPtpMHSoQeLP-pWyanweUVZkvZHD219y5guzZFsD95swmLJBa1IFJUIOLNcHxtSJEyBhL/s1600/dragon+fruit+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijhos9g_vWuxqrr2yUed3NJCKnkopQLe_Czo0osCmqucSQgfj4coOYNfkA7S9Q6NBaJNCdcVlGPtpMHSoQeLP-pWyanweUVZkvZHD219y5guzZFsD95swmLJBa1IFJUIOLNcHxtSJEyBhL/s1600/dragon+fruit+1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That "chocolate chip ice cream" look is what was in the fruit bowl.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmboYxbcTdmy9PKcYti06CiFkvfLMDsqzkpBiobq-3Y9gtaZf4T9isz04iqHBDgiQAzEqWg9v9sIRutmB6KZ-BPs-vAV2ajAUCvNKJZEer-TnLdRucSuknh7Xhx9FcisbQ5-wN2XwM0JRl/s1600/dragon+fruit+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmboYxbcTdmy9PKcYti06CiFkvfLMDsqzkpBiobq-3Y9gtaZf4T9isz04iqHBDgiQAzEqWg9v9sIRutmB6KZ-BPs-vAV2ajAUCvNKJZEer-TnLdRucSuknh7Xhx9FcisbQ5-wN2XwM0JRl/s1600/dragon+fruit+2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is how they grow.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQy5Rns1qwI53gs10Cvp4QMVjbdB2noeHR_gV2ecODm65cmCj5rGbf4ek3qjZ-Sb1414tMdSnYZpOIRgg0k5f4HKDVc4cyd1yOKqWUxj_bDMKvwLmJubV8Gw_Le3QCH-42ij9gFeUKRLuB/s1600/dragon+fruit+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQy5Rns1qwI53gs10Cvp4QMVjbdB2noeHR_gV2ecODm65cmCj5rGbf4ek3qjZ-Sb1414tMdSnYZpOIRgg0k5f4HKDVc4cyd1yOKqWUxj_bDMKvwLmJubV8Gw_Le3QCH-42ij9gFeUKRLuB/s1600/dragon+fruit+3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pretty pink!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've used this color and LOVE the results. Two of my favorite dyed pieces use this. Here's my favorite batik I've made so far:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkjYrndMqTvykqZnbTtGXRZBbZcIeO8UC0uUIJhQ0WSqAofkKGWNUyiah-R26sAOJ6NOSCdR3H7PsHcLpQgoEjHVgmHLYMp7XPl01Bl3oKD5sAdjP8G2-0lQW15J29WOW8pKvO633KmZZ/s1600/moss+rose+lfront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqkjYrndMqTvykqZnbTtGXRZBbZcIeO8UC0uUIJhQ0WSqAofkKGWNUyiah-R26sAOJ6NOSCdR3H7PsHcLpQgoEjHVgmHLYMp7XPl01Bl3oKD5sAdjP8G2-0lQW15J29WOW8pKvO633KmZZ/s1600/moss+rose+lfront.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"Moss Rose" Batik</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I saw a packet of seeds for Moss Roses in pink and yellow in a field of green grass and was inspired to make this piece. It's listed on my Etsy site for sale <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/188513439/hand-dyed-batik-pink-yellow-green-rose?ref=shop_home_active_6" target="_blank"><span style="color: magenta;">HERE</span></a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I shaped and dyed a piece without any wax resist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcphdUgijSlJM-CgJ7KEy34LRXfjR-W_7OqZP2fZ6gtI8ru_940cfOWg5N1o7EIhhOF9OkqtFPe_iw8evNKBmiH1C4mlLPOybJjhtl_Gl0fcyyZHLp0EtciVrg3BtpxtWCxdRksFr7fIVJ/s1600/CAM02020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcphdUgijSlJM-CgJ7KEy34LRXfjR-W_7OqZP2fZ6gtI8ru_940cfOWg5N1o7EIhhOF9OkqtFPe_iw8evNKBmiH1C4mlLPOybJjhtl_Gl0fcyyZHLp0EtciVrg3BtpxtWCxdRksFr7fIVJ/s1600/CAM02020.jpg" height="320" width="304" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Dragon Fruit</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really think this is my favorite ever dyed fabric without the batik. The color is SO rich and didn't fade at all when I washed it. It's listed on Etsy <span style="color: magenta;"><a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/188541044/hand-dyed-fuschia-fabric-fat-quarter?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank">HERE</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More fabrics are listed there and I have more to list. Hoping to finish some purses soon to sell, too. The bills come faster than the money, so Mama's gotta earn something!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for stopping by! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I'm losing dye somewhere. I rewatched my class on wax resist and dyeing so will try something new next time. I was combining what I learned for that class with what I learned in my class for just dyeing (without any resist). Anyway, here are the results after all the steps.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlMSwRS0d3Ymas-zgCVB-SIUgTAuq94QkJVPfYw0gqtEAa5h6qa8ei_jGVv3Va959QRAnfwcwpmcDHHxbExFha0N37nCgTTIDQ_RrX-Lw9swDsWU9We19j6bp2IY43iFLBE-3PHDbov3zW/s1600/CAM01886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlMSwRS0d3Ymas-zgCVB-SIUgTAuq94QkJVPfYw0gqtEAa5h6qa8ei_jGVv3Va959QRAnfwcwpmcDHHxbExFha0N37nCgTTIDQ_RrX-Lw9swDsWU9We19j6bp2IY43iFLBE-3PHDbov3zW/s1600/CAM01886.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Faded. Even lighter in person than in the picture. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO5s0sYlT0ASHJwcS4fabMXGqQZk7LVAvh-V65nTsPz7IogPdkB-VPwpNwa5MB3b-C5sjsDvKPcejGVBIXWnA7QvgTue9vgUgPPX3g_waVg39KHGPDP6DeCuwSBpv9PHEZVFcl8d1_BBHy/s1600/CAM01888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO5s0sYlT0ASHJwcS4fabMXGqQZk7LVAvh-V65nTsPz7IogPdkB-VPwpNwa5MB3b-C5sjsDvKPcejGVBIXWnA7QvgTue9vgUgPPX3g_waVg39KHGPDP6DeCuwSBpv9PHEZVFcl8d1_BBHy/s1600/CAM01888.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Funny story: I couldn't find my jalapeƱo cookie cutter to make a potato stamp. I thought I had it, but it turned out to be a goldfish. So, I used the goldfish but added some extra leaves on about half of this piece. Then I found the pepper stamp, which made the goldfish peppers look like red carrots. Oh, well! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Better, but lime green isn't what I was going for. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not at all what I wanted for flowers, teacups & teapots. Might overdye this one. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Cool fall design, but colors are kind of weird. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried using lace as a resist. Not a good thing. This one is really a deeper purple & a cool look after overdyeing it in deep purple. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is closer to maroon in real life. Weird. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhHaXZCIOf1pXpNuFaCZ7lJyX45f9SHQ8haYoLFQyNxpPtvNvJ-0HnoEL4ZGfLMvIvc0OZbtbqOcTWXrnFLzXlPevJMPirwJ8ECnDacMgKGuryPMz2OqMhAw0_8aQVPiTuwCcyC4CwUQZa/s1600/CAM01889.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhHaXZCIOf1pXpNuFaCZ7lJyX45f9SHQ8haYoLFQyNxpPtvNvJ-0HnoEL4ZGfLMvIvc0OZbtbqOcTWXrnFLzXlPevJMPirwJ8ECnDacMgKGuryPMz2OqMhAw0_8aQVPiTuwCcyC4CwUQZa/s1600/CAM01889.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tried using a water based resist & painting in Texas. Where it didn't run past the resist it looks cool. Otherwise, you have Texas with Arkansas, Louisiana, Mexico , New Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico. LOL! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will either redye some of these or just use them where I can. Trial & error. </div>

Needless to say, when I tossed boiling into the mix on Facebook, my friends were a bit taken aback! I've been trying my hand at dyeing fabric for a couple of years. Recently, I added wax printing (batik) to the process. I'm loving the process, but my results aren't usually how I've imagined them in my head. It's a learning process. I would love to become good enough at this to sell my fabric pieces. In fact, I may even try tossing a few onto my Etsy store soon just to see how it goes.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of initial attempts at the process.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgePWi0xpQKaOCxSSVvOGaonh7NQEWXL7HN9v961v_FQXRuAKmfN2sM-Fb1ePbVHzPJKttRLqEwRH4soZE1uJHqDQEK-_9r2tixlXGlE71L5FLFtIplCsZzHFvRciZHHgS0W4LvUMdqIHFy/s1600/CAM01854.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgePWi0xpQKaOCxSSVvOGaonh7NQEWXL7HN9v961v_FQXRuAKmfN2sM-Fb1ePbVHzPJKttRLqEwRH4soZE1uJHqDQEK-_9r2tixlXGlE71L5FLFtIplCsZzHFvRciZHHgS0W4LvUMdqIHFy/s1600/CAM01854.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was supposed to be the Yellow Rose of Texas. The blue shows up somewhat in this picture, but in person, it was very hard to see the Texas. This piece got more wax, some bleach, some dye, and more wax and dye. Waiting for it to dry now!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjt96F8ukxeIQJDQ2mNVAoi3Hgx3llkXvLemKqnKpOYAs7k4yzM-1ARxbRHy-jeSFKxFvZUYUJwodfH4mml5Hpm4DTTnUcWDTsSD0SigZIF-DokcMKW1-W8727KWcxKy-VtDSWeFsJw1Y/s1600/CAM01856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjt96F8ukxeIQJDQ2mNVAoi3Hgx3llkXvLemKqnKpOYAs7k4yzM-1ARxbRHy-jeSFKxFvZUYUJwodfH4mml5Hpm4DTTnUcWDTsSD0SigZIF-DokcMKW1-W8727KWcxKy-VtDSWeFsJw1Y/s1600/CAM01856.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Butterflies in pink on peach. Except you can't make out the butterflies. I did more waxing and overdyed it. It's now a maroon funky piece that will have to be used as a filler for something. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZi8F1ivXZiSBHKqlU4sT3tG2UrgheImTADcw8njI6bhKw0ab64Mr0H19uxEhcuD16pG2aIlayY7iO4omIf0SXSM3rlN28jD_oUJq6Jbfb9pKfKu4KDusOVthkjY1UMqENOg02ma5G-lv/s1600/CAM01858.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZi8F1ivXZiSBHKqlU4sT3tG2UrgheImTADcw8njI6bhKw0ab64Mr0H19uxEhcuD16pG2aIlayY7iO4omIf0SXSM3rlN28jD_oUJq6Jbfb9pKfKu4KDusOVthkjY1UMqENOg02ma5G-lv/s1600/CAM01858.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Love this one. It faded when I washed it, though. Still pretty, but a very pale pink. I need to use more dye next time. The "stamp" is a part of a back massager from Walmart! LOL! </div>

Cheap potato masher & a mini bell pepper provided the stamps. Added some more color & stamps to this. Waiting to see the final result. </div>

Way too pale a red. I re-dyed it in red for vibrance. I stamped hearts in Texas (as in "deep in the heart of Texas) and added some jalapeƱos (or red peppers, to be accurate). We'll see how it comes out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The part I don't like that I need to find a work around is removing color in between dyes. You can't get some colors next to each other (they'd mix) so you have to remove some of the color. The best way is with bleach and vinegar. NOT together! One, then the other. I want to see if there are any safer ways to do this. The fumes aren't good for any of us. If I do it again I'll try going outside & using dishpans. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've also hand "dyed" some fabric with fabric paint. I've used Dye-Na-Flow from Jacquard and have some Lumiere to use, too. I tried just adding Textile Medium to craft acrylic, but the paint is still too stiff when it dries. The Jacquard fabric paints are very soft when they dry, just like dye. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll share pictures of these fabrics finished when they're ready! </div>

For now, I'll show you the almost finished Tumbler Flag Quilts I've been working on:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/382194_10152894149525724_291263482_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/382194_10152894149525724_291263482_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
They started like this. I sewed pairs of "tumblers" together, then sewed the pairs to each other and finally made rows. Then the rows got sewn together to come up with this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/p206x206/970820_10152913322720724_1461605705_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/p206x206/970820_10152913322720724_1461605705_n.jpg" /></a></div>
As you can see, it needs a good pressing with some steam or spray starch (my favorite is Mary Ellen's Best Press). Then I'll trim the edges even and add borders. Finally I'll quilt them and put binding on the edges to list in my Etsy Shop.<br />
<br />
I first saw this idea on Missouri Star Quilt Company's youtube page. You can see the tutorial here if you like to sew:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Did I mention my 14 year old is going to church camp and it took us over 10 stores (and many long hours) of hunting to find a one piece swimsuit that fits her, covers her, and doesn't look like a Grandma suit? Plus we had to find shorts. We found some but then got jeans at Good Will to cut into shorts. We'll add lace to spiffy them up. And I have to alter the swimsuit. She leaves Wednesday morning so my goal is to SEW and let Bethany craft to her heart's content for the time Natalie is gone! Look for updates soon!Chef Mama Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10687302929905648791noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6940471139073501583.post-44408160712791761862013-01-19T23:30:00.002-08:002013-01-19T23:30:44.522-08:00I've been Dye-ing to Tell YouHave you ever taken a class at Craftsy? Check out <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/">www.craftsy.com</a> and you can see what I'm talking about. These are online classes you take, but you do it on your own time. It's all pre-recorded. The teacher responds to questions as well as other students responding. Some cost money and a few are free. Some are kind of steep in price, but they offer specials frequently.<br />
<br />
After Christmas they had a huge sale. I used some gift money to buy a few classes. Two of the classes are about how to dye. I am so glad I'm typing that and not saying it. LOL! One is simply about dyeing fabric and the other is about batik. I don't have the equipment yet for batik and I don't have the official fancy dye for either course (which is actually cheaper than the stuff I have, but the shipping is high & no one sells it locally). I have been playing with the dyes I do have at home. The teacher has shown us how to fold the fabric for different effects. I have no idea which folds I did on these, but thought I'd share a couple of my first attempts.<br />

As you can see, the first two have vibrant color and cool patterning. The bottom one, well, I'm chalking it up to experience. Or lack thereof. I used a pale blue shade of dye then added a touch of purple to the water. It pretty much did nothing. I think I later redyed it with some other colors. I have other pieces I've done different things with. Bubble wrap makes a really cool almost honeycomb design! Spare pennies wrapped up make, well, dots! LOL!<br />
<br />
It's not as if I have nothing to do, but I enjoy this and hopefully can make some pretty enough dyed pieces to sell. Natalie said I should make charm packs out of them (packs of 5" squares). It's an idea!<br />
<br />
I have several purses in the middle of construction. I need to get those finished & listed on Etsy!<br />
<br />
Hope you have a splendid day!<br />
<br />Chef Mama Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10687302929905648791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6940471139073501583.post-4994643396413879142012-10-04T23:34:00.001-07:002012-10-04T23:34:51.264-07:00Is it REALLY October?Beautiful colored leaves drifting slowly from the trees to piles on the ground. A chill in the air requiring a sweater in the morning. Pumpkins for sale in all the stores.<br />
<br />
In San Antonio we have one out of 3! The only "color" in our leaves is brown and a sweater is someone who goes out in the afternoon for a walk. Wait a minute & you'll get that. LOL!<br />
<br />
My calendar tells me it's October, though, so I guess it is. I had a goal to be finished with ALL fall themed quilted/sewn items by the end of September to list on Etsy. I didn't make that deadline, so I've set a new one for October 15th. What isn't finished by then will wait til next summer when I will get things finished for the following end of September!<br />
<br />
So far I have 2 items completed. Here are sneak peaks of those:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/p206x206/400908_10152161942855724_1563934335_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/p206x206/400908_10152161942855724_1563934335_n.jpg" /></a></div>
Please ignore any resemblance of a messy house around this table runner. Who knows what glimpses into our lives you might find there!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/579823_10152161945960724_518739530_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/579823_10152161945960724_518739530_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
These pictures were before I added binding to the quilts. Those are completely finished and ready for me to photograph and list for sale.<br />
<br />
I'm also working on a few turkey items. Some wall hangings & pillow covers. I decided to turn some of the projects into reusable slip covers for pillows because it seems silly to buy a new pillow for each season. By having changeable covers, you can make your home seasonal year round and save on storage space.<br />
<br />
As soon as I hit my deadline OR finish the projects (whichever comes first), I will be working on Christmas items, both seasonal and gift related.<br />
<br />
Some of you have asked if I would make some of the duffel bags like the ones I made Natalie:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/179103_10151810403445724_844401747_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="312" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/179103_10151810403445724_844401747_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
YES! I have purchased several pieces of fabric to make some for selling on Etsy. I'll get there! : )<br />
<br />
We've been told it COULD be getting cooler this weekend, with a high of 66. A friend asked if the numbers were just upside down! LOL! Hopefully it will FEEL like fall is here for a day. Though, I know that in Texas if you stick around long enough, it will be hot again.<br />
<br />
Have a GREAT day and thanks for stopping by! <br />

She is such a fun little girl. As her grandma said, "I thought Becky (Karis' mom) was intense as a child. Karis has her beat hands down!" She is a 100% kind of kid. She laughs with 100% of her body. She loves with 100% of her tenderness. She gets mad with 100% of her anger. I would say it's all or nothing with her, but it's always ALL! And she SO reminds me of my Natalie at that age. That is exactly how we described her. But Karis is her own person and not Natalie, Becky or anyone else. Every little curl of hair and sparkle in her eye is 100% Karis!<br />

For her birthday I made her a matching dress and baby doll dress. I only got a picture of her dress. My niece-in-law Katie made the cutest tutu with matching wand and headband to look like Abby from Sesame Street. I've never seen Abby, but somehow my 13 year old knows about her. What does that child do when I'm asleep? <br />

Thanks to Becky and Natalie (aka Mini-Becky #1) for holding the dress. Not professional pics, but I think you get the idea of how cute little girl clothes are with these shots! </div>

Yes, it is true. I MIGHT be leaving out some details, though. She and her husband were taking a trip to California and going to tour Alcatraz. She MIGHT also do Prison ministry, as my niece does, so who knows, maybe the bag will be going to prison again.<br />
<br />
She saw THIS purse on my Etsy site and liked the style, but wanted it bigger and in different colors:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://ny-image1.etsy.com/000/0/5631741/il_570xN.171872973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://ny-image1.etsy.com/000/0/5631741/il_570xN.171872973.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
She told me some of the shades she liked and we searched online (we live in different states) to find fabrics that reflected her style. That is part of the fun of making custom bags. While I would make all bags in bright fabrics and/or florals, not everyone likes that. This way I can design something to fit someone's tastes and it is one of a kind!<br />
<br />
She also wanted a make-up bag and a mini bag to use as a coin purse. Here are the final products. My daughter is modeling the big bag.<br />

That is, she asked me if I made Barbie clothes, and if she could send me some money to make some. I said, "Not if I don't have to" to the first question and "SURE" to the second one! Barbie is a small character. She's very small. Her clothes are very small. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">very very small</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">I was happy to do this, but got so caught up in what to make that it took me awhile to do this. I finished all but one dress that I still need to make. I had another outfit cut out, but my daughter & I both looked at it & decided it was UGLY fabric so I am tossing that one into the scrap bag. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Here are the outfits that I sent. By the way, the "ugly" pants & shorts are for Ken. Men just don't get the pretty things. Except for Barbie. </span></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: xx-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">The following week I made an outfit for my precious great niece who turned 2 last week. I made her a matching doll outfit as well. You may think that sewing for a 2 year old means lots of little pieces. I am here to tell you that after working on <span style="font-size: xx-small;">very small</span> clothes for Barbie, I felt like I was sewing for a giant rather than a 2 year old! Now I am cutting out some things for me as well as altering a pair of pj pants that didn't fit well that I made. Those clothes REALLY feel like they are for giants! I will post pictures of those when I have them all done. </span></span><br />

A birthday gift for my oldest great niece, Emery. She is 3 years old today! Aunt Lori the Great (I gave myself a great aunt name, like a Grandma name) is ever so slow at getting things done. Emery's quilt from last year still hasn't been quilted. I waited until today to decide what to make and bought fabric and trimmings today. I actually made this apron & hat in about 2 hours from start to finish! It does cause the cute-o-meter to rise, but tomorrow when Emery and her 3 cousins are together (all girls so far, ages almost 2, 7 months and 3 months), the cute-o-meter might just break with cuteness!<br />

If you are a child of the 70's, you very likely had a kitchen with colors like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5JXcrJDgMntKOeyJ85kauAsEh6Pj6velndpJgcFP8E35IeXbZWOqgWs5PygJU1gPO_GSh94DSYIuQLp2wSo-cGC9AvSGy0F9xWFd-foHkEL_1-rn2FAvRuKndK4dxLkXlrwL_hlqqgKBk/s400/trends-harvest+gold+uglyhousephotos.com" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5JXcrJDgMntKOeyJ85kauAsEh6Pj6velndpJgcFP8E35IeXbZWOqgWs5PygJU1gPO_GSh94DSYIuQLp2wSo-cGC9AvSGy0F9xWFd-foHkEL_1-rn2FAvRuKndK4dxLkXlrwL_hlqqgKBk/s320/trends-harvest+gold+uglyhousephotos.com" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(used from the Charming Zebra website found <a href="http://charmingdecor.blogspot.com/2011/07/following-decorating-trends.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
OR this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media.knoxnews.com/media/img/photos/2010/01/05/70s_house_0004_t607.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://media.knoxnews.com/media/img/photos/2010/01/05/70s_house_0004_t607.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(found at <a href="http://www.knoxnews.com/photos/galleries/2010/jan/09/kestons-1970s-decorated-home/17287/" target="_blank">THIS</a> website)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Or, as "Miss Charming" from the Charming Zebra site says, "There was a time when everyone had either brown, orange or harvest gold
appliances. They were very stylish at the time--not so much now." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We had harvest gold, but LOTS of decor in orange & brown. I'd forgotten that til I read Miss Charming's comment. I think I might be a bit nauseous now.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I thought we had moved past all these colors until a few years ago when I was at a Pampered Chef Leadership conference (back when I was a director, before I stopped being a consultant and then started again). They showed us this new "fun color cutlery line." FUN color. FUN???? See for yourself:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.pamperedchef.com/images/product/resized/1059_enlarge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.pamperedchef.com/images/product/resized/1059_enlarge.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is NOT a fun color, in my most humble opinion, however it IS a very sharp knife (and you can order one from me if you'd like!). I have scars to prove how sharp it is. I have a former host of PC shows who can also tell you how sharp it is. The first time I did a show at her house I caught my oven mitt on fire. The next time I sliced my finger open. She had to leave the room so she didn't see it while a former Army Medic, who happened to be at the show, bandaged me and I told someone how to make dessert! Clearly, there is NOTHING fun involved with something this color. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, the next decade brought different shades. If you survived the 80's, you know the colors I'm about to mention. Country blue and.....everyone say it in unison...mauve! I'm pretty sure I had 2 mauve bridesmaid dresses. My wedding also had shades of blue & a rosy pink that were similar to country blue & mauve, but brighter. The country shades were just a tad to grey for me. And those of us who were children in the 70's and grew into young adulthood in the 80's vowed we would NEVER have harvest gold or avocado green (or brown with orange for that matter) in our homes. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Most of us who married and had kids in the 80's & 90's now have kids moving into adulthood or already there. What I want to know is this: Do kids of the 80's & 90's detest country blue and mauve as much as we detested harvest gold (not just any gold, of course) and avocado green? And did our parents vow to never use turquoise or pale pink in their homes? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I stumbled onto this fantastic website with all kinds of color schemes called <a href="http://www.colorschemer.com/" target="_blank">Color Schemer</a> (click on it to get there). When I searched for 40's colors <a href="http://www.colorschemer.com/schemes/search.php?s=40s&submit=Search" target="_blank">this page</a> came up. I kind of like the colors there. By the way, what a cool site for anyone wanting to see colors put together for home decor, quilting, stamping, scrapbooking, or even cake decorating. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What colors do you think will be the "harvest gold" or "mauve" of the future? I guess only time will tell. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

A dear friend's daughter is getting married and I was asked to make the dress. I'll show pictures after the wedding. It's a "hippie-boho" style (or so says the picture she showed me that we are recreating). I wouldn't call it hippie and I'm not sure what boho is, but there are no sparkles and it's almost all cotton! It's a fitted dress and let's just say she has shape. Dolly Parton-esque, you might say.<br />
<br />
That's my project to finish this week. She's out of town and comes home Thursday, then leaves on the 19th for the wedding location----England! They will live there & he is English. Needless to say my needles will be flying before she does, so no blogging til this is done.<br />
<br />

The "auditions" for the competition are this month and can be seen <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/slicedcontest" target="_blank">HERE</a>. I have 2 entries completed and hope to finish one more before the 29th. Between selling Girl Scout cookies, planning a wedding dress I am making for a friend's daughter, and homeschooling, we'll see if I get the 3rd one done!<br />
<br />
For the auditions, the rules were to use precut fabrics from Moda, a buckle, batting and create an item for an office or studio. Also, any additional fabric must be Moda fabric. For both of these projects I used Prairie Paisley 2 charm packs. Other info is with each project.<br />

<br />
Here are the details about the Valentine's Day Wall Hanging I recently made:<br />
I used the basic idea of the wall hanging from <a href="http://www.missouriquiltco.com/">Missouri Star Quilt Company</a> in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/MissouriQuiltCo#p/u/43/5ITYj7d2yuo">THIS VIDEO</a> on Youtube. Jenny used charm packs for her darling quilt. I decided to cut my own squares since I didn't have a cute charm pack for Valentine's, but I DID have Valentine's fabric. I used my Sizzix Bigz XL 5" square cutting die, but you could cut them with your rotary cutter and ruler. When it came to the border, I wanted the word "LOVE" to show, and didn't have enough fabric to cut the long strips ensuring the word would show. I fussy cut some strips 5" x 9.5" and sewed those together for the side edges 9 (3 of those pieces). For the top, I also added some corner pieces to add a little contrast.<br />
<br />
This was a lot of fun to make and really easy! You just have to make sure you have your triangle pieces turned the right way when you arrange them!<br />
<br />
Let me know if you try this one, too!Chef Mama Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10687302929905648791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6940471139073501583.post-52646489139498483972012-01-31T00:00:00.000-08:002012-01-31T00:00:33.781-08:00Twirly Skirt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/p480x480/417083_10151228729915724_652025723_22914380_2140096777_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/p480x480/417083_10151228729915724_652025723_22914380_2140096777_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Pretend you don't see the ugly ironing board cover (yes, I need a new cover AND better pad on it). I just need to measure it so I can list it on Etsy. I want to redo the pics with my camera, though. We used Natalie's b/c my battery wasn't charged. I'll see how these look but really like the way my old Kodak Easy Share (it's from 2004 & still takes great shots!) takes pics. I've been using my phone mostly b/c my computer doesn't recognize the USB port when I plug in my camera or phone. It's a pain to send a pic to Facebook, transfer to computer, then edit & upload. Isn't that crazy! Just 10 years ago all I could do was take a picture & send it to be developed when I finished the roll! How easily we get spoiled!<br />
<br />
Without further blah, blah, blah, I present the quilt:<br />

I hope to finish binding it today & list it on Etsy! Then I'll quilt & bind this one. I also am hoping to make some little skirts for my great nieces, but need their mommies to send me measurements. Funny, my 13 year old and 15 year old daughters won't let me make little twirly skirts for them out of Valentine's Fabric. LOL!<br />

I found some darling Valentine's Day fabric, but of course it is too late to do much with them now in time for February 14th. I thought this little one might be just a little cutie to hang on someone's wall.<br />

December came and went in a flash! I hope you are having a great new year. I just finished a project that was requested by a customer. This is a rag quilt made with cranberry and navy shades, along with some tan for a neutral. There's a touch of green in the cute quilt print designs, too. I hope this will bring lots of comfort and warmth to my customer!<br />

<br />
I'm going to start this post a little differently than the typical "Look what I did today" post. I want to discuss a topic that is very much a "hot button" for Christians. On October 31st there is a celebration that happens every year. That's what most people think. When most folks hear the date "October 31st" one word comes to mind: Halloween. For me, it is a different story.<br />
<br />
First, October 31st is celebrated in our family for a different reason. It is my Mom's birthday. It also happens to be the day after my Sister-in-law's birthday. My mom turned 75 this year! If you didn't see her story on Facebook and want to know how amazing it is that she is here, starting with her birth, ask me & I'll share it with you. I won't share my SIL's age. When she's 75 & we start counting birthdays again I might. LOL!<br />
<br />
Next, October 31st was the day many, many, many years ago that Martin Luther (the German, not ML King) nailed his 500 theses to the door of a monastery. Here is how I remember that story going and you are free to correct me. He had joined the monastery. As he studied the Word of God (the Bible), he began to see fallacies in the teachings of the church in Germany at that time. He wrote these down and on 10/31 in that year a LONG, LONG time ago, he nailed it to the door of the monastery. Today, the Lutheran church is named after him and many protestant churches would say they were "born" out of that event.<br />
<br />
Okay, so for the rest of the folks, 10/31 is Halloween. Most of us grew up loving this day. Candy, costumes, candy, more candy, and more candy....what wasn't to love? We dressed in cheap nylon costumes with plastic masks (remember those with the tiny elastic that always broke?). Sometimes we might have a homemade costume. As I got older I'd make my own costume. In college I was a blue Crayon one time! I loved dressing up. Of course, there was always the invasion of witches, ghosts, and goblins and a haunted house or 2. I never liked the super scary, though, so it was the "fun" witch stuff. Stay with me if you're already tuning out with those words!<br />
<br />
Many of us grew up and as we grew in our faith in the Lord we started learning what the origins of Halloween were. The Druids, the pagans, etc. Though, originally, if I remember correctly, that was a whole different event that later got tied in with the superstition of Halloween (appeasing evil spirits) the night before All Saints Day in the Catholic church. It made me want nothing to do with Halloween. At all. I would even hear Christians say that it was the devil's day. It was a day of evil. It was a day that we should avoid.<br />
<br />
Then I heard some wisdom from a dear sister in the Lord. It was as simple as this, "This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Ps. 118:24. She told me that she realized that by saying it was the devil's day we were giving him the glory. EVERY day is God's day. Did she mean we should go celebrate Halloween? No. But she did remind me that we need to claim EACH day as a gift from God to not give our enemy a foothold.<br />
<br />
Next came the issue of what to do with kids on 10/31. When they were little it was easy: Celebrate Mammaw's birthday! We weren't home to deal with the trick or treaters, etc. As they got a bit bigger I thought we might go to some fall festivals, though I wondered if kids still saw those as Halloween and didn't make the distinction that it was to celebrate the good things of the Lord. I THOUGHT that's what we'd do. But things don't always work as we think they will. We discovered our elder child had autism. Mild, but autism none the lest. We tried a church festival. It didn't work. In fact, it failed. Miserably. The poor child had the deer in the headlights look the whole night and did NOTHING. I knew this was not going to work for us.<br />
<br />
Somewhere along the line I decided to hand out candy. I wanted to share the BEST treat of all: the love of Jesus. So, I made up some little cards that said "Jesus is the sweetest treat of all" with a Bible verse. I knew kids well enough (I had a degree in kids, after all) to know that that alone would get tossed. So I attached it to candy and handed it out. Sweet little Bethany, all of 3 or 4 at the time, knew people would come for candy, but didn't understand the whole concept. She asked me, "When are the friends coming?"<br />
<br />
As much as we tried to avoid the ugliness that comes with Halloween, it was impossible to do. People decorate for that day around here like it's Christmas. And in stores, you just can't avoid it. I'll never forget the day we were in the grocery store parking lot and tiny Bethany (only 3 or so) asked me, "Who's the white guy?" She spoke early, and clearly. And literally. I had no idea this was part of Asperger Syndrome (her form of autism) at the time. Turned out the "white guy" was a huge ghost atop the store entry.<br />
<br />
After much debating & praying, we decided to try trick or treating with the girls. First, dressing up was no problem. Most kids love to dress up now & then. My kids loved to dress up daily. They were often "in character." From Cleopatra to the "Nerds" to dj's, and so much more, we never knew who they would be from day to day. Of course they loved candy. As my niece recently wrote, "A day for dressing up and candy. What's NOT to love?" LOL! I decided to use this event, this going from house to house dressed in costume begging for candy, as a social skills lesson. After all, who doesn't want their kids growing up to beg from others? Just kidding. For Bethany, it was an opportunity for her to practice on grand scale looking at people and saying words to them. It was scripted, "Trick or treat." She didn't have to converse. She did have to follow up with "Thank you," though. Now, if anyone asked a question, I'd have to feed her words to say. For Natalie all of these reasons were a non-issue. She's adhd. She loved the fall festival. She was happy to play every game---if she could win. She still leads the charge on 10/31 and determines which houses have people home or not and precisely how long to stay at each door.<br />
<br />
From the beginning of the "white guy" I've been telling the girls how we don't celebrate evil. We've talked repeatedly about how death is NOT something to be celebrated, mocked, and glorified. I don't mean to be this way, but I have to admit that I am literally repulsed by cemeteries in people's yards and costumes that are images of death and evil. The people don't repulse me. I know under the costume is a human. But I am just super sensitive to these things. Maybe because I lost a brother when he was 17. I've seen too many people die early. Death is only beautiful when it is the passing of a believing soul into the arms of Jesus. But killing of people, or the depiction of it, is not beautiful. I could barely get through Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl when Natalie & I had to read it.<br />
<br />
Some of you will agree with me. Some of you will adamantly disagree with me. That's okay. My convictions are not yours, and yours are not mine. We are to hold one another accountable, but ultimately, we have to stand before the Lord with our accounts. <br />
<br />
Above are this year's costumes for 10/31. Nat wanted a Renaissance dress and we hope to find a family friendly fair to visit next year. She just can't grow much. LOL! Bethany created her cat costume. The red hair is just because she wanted to see it redder than it's natural reddish-strawberry color and knew I'd only let her do it that day.<br />
<br />
Below are some of the MANY costumes they've had over the years. BTW, Bethany is currently filming and producing a movie for a homeschool literature project and was dressed up today as a man from the 1860's. Dress up is NOT just for Halloween!<br />

</tbody></table>About the title of this post: I used to call 10/31 Hallelujah Day. I then thought of the meaning of the word "Halloween." Hallow: holy, E'en: evening. Holy Evening. I like that. It's not what the originators meant it to be. It's not what 99% of folks today mean it to be. But it's a name I like. A reminder to live holy lives daily. May every evening be a Holy Evening and may every day be one in which we rejoice that THIS is the day the Lord has made!Chef Mama Lorihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10687302929905648791noreply@blogger.com0
